Interview and assessment

If your online application is shortlisted, you will be invited to interview. At this point, we will be looking to assess your analytical thinking, your communication skills and your interest in private equity. Come prepared to talk about the sector, the firm and why you want to be here.

Apply online

Submit your application through our online portal. We review applications after the deadline – not on a rolling basis – so take the time to make yours as strong as it can be before you submit.

Vacation scheme and training contract assessment

If you are successful at the interview stage, we will offer you a place on one of our vacation schemes. During the scheme, we will assess you for a training contract. Perform well and we will follow up with a formal offer. It is as straightforward as that.

Hints & Tips

How to make your application stand out

Know your reasons.

We will ask why you want to work in private equity and why you want to do it at Simpson Thacher specifically. Vague answers will not get you far. Do your research, understand what makes this firm different and be specific about why that matters to you.

Know the work.

Read about the kinds of deals private equity lawyers advise on. The ‘Private equity explained’ section of this site is a good place to start. Demonstrating genuine commercial awareness will set you apart from candidates who have simply memorised a list of practice areas.

Be yourself.

We are not looking for a particular type. We are looking for people who are intellectually curious, commercially minded and genuinely motivated. The best thing you can do in an interview is think clearly and speak honestly.

Prepare questions.

The interview is also your chance to find out whether Simpson Thacher is right for you. Thoughtful questions tell us as much about you as your answers do.
